DJ Martin Garrex opens Dutch National Action Day for Sulawesi

On October 2 2018 Giro555, an alliance of eleven Dutch relief organisations that campaign together when major disasters require a national appeal, launched the national campaign ‘The Netherlands are helping Sulawesi’. Within 24 hours, already 1 million Euro was raised.

One week after this launch, on Wednesday October 10, Dutch broadcasting companies joined Giro555 in a National Action Day for Sulawesi on radio and television. At 12.00 hrs, world famous DJ Martin Garrex gave the kick off for this day in a one-day pop-up studio at the Mediapark in Hilversum, a city in the center of Holland.

During the day, famous Dutch artists, dancers, cooks and politicians came by to perform and to contribute to the National Action Day for Sulawesi. People were invited to come to the pop-up studio and bring their gifts for Sulawesi. Outside the pop-up studio, visitors could experience by Virtual Reality what is it to be an aid worker in a situation of disaster.

Part of the pop-up studio was a one-day call center, where volunteers registered donations of people calling in to make a contribution for emergency aid in Sulawesi. Whole day long, Dutch celebrities came by to help answering the incoming phone calls.

At the end of the day the amount of funds raised by that time (23 hrs) was announced live on national television, in a popular late night talk show. The result was overwhelming: over 11 million euro. People in the Netherland can still donate for Sulawesi until the end of December through the national Giro555 appeal.
