Dutch Donate EUR 1 million for Indonesia in 24 hours
On 2 October 2018, Giro555 — an alliance of eleven Dutch relief organisations that campaign together when major disasters require a national appeal — launched the national campaign ‘The Netherlands are helping Sulawesi’.
Special connection with Indonesia
Within 24 hours after the start of the national campaign, the Dutch gave EUR 1 million for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi. Indonesia was a former colony of the Netherlands between 1816 and 1949, which is why there are strong connections between Indonesia and the Netherlands. There are many Dutch inhabitants with Indonesian roots.
First aid has started
NGOs are busy offering as quickly as possible medical help, clean drinking water and other emergency goods to the people that have been most affected. Field hospitals have been set up in Palu, Donggala and Sigi. The doctors are especially treating people with injuries, broken bones and bruises. They treat more and more people with diarrhea, stomach problems and flu. Most people have to sleep on the streets and have a shortage of clean drinking water.
